I have a bachelor's degree from Smith College in biological sciences (specialization in botany) and a master's degree, C.Phil., and Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of California, San Diego.
I retired in 2012 from the large and active Florida State University Department of Biological Science after 30 years as its scientific editor.
During my time there, I edited hundreds of scientific journal articles, book chapters, and grant proposals, as well as correspondence, course materials, promotion and tenure documents, faculty vitae, and special projects (like the university's reaccreditation materials and the application for accreditation of the Florida State College of Medicine). In addition, I edited over 25 book-length manuscripts, including many volumes of the Proceedings of the Mote International Fisheries Symposia, the 1984 symposium volume Ecological Communities: Conceptual Issues and the Evidence, Daniel Simberloff et al.'s 1997 Strangers in Paradise, and Walter Tschinkel's 2006 Pulitzer-nominated The Fire Ants. When I'm not editing, I read, travel, play golf (badly), and cook.
